WHAT IS CETALOX?

As said in the ambergris article, Ambreine (the principal component of ambergris mass) was identified in 1820 when Joseph-Bienaimé Caventou (1795 1877) e Pierre-Joseph Pelletier (1788-1842) isolated and characterized the compound.

Ambreine is practically odorless and was a fixative used in perfumery. The important olfactory components, of which (-)-Ambrox is by far the most important, are generated during the maturation period at sea. With the oxidative degradation of the central double bond of Ambrein, cyclic compounds are formed which, due to the salinity of seawater, can be partially chlorinated. The key reaction is photooxidation by oxygen.

The diastereoisomeric mixture is called Cetalox® and is Firmenich International SA's trade names.

In simpler words: Cetalox is the diastereoisomer of ambroxan, and it is a trademark of 1994 from Firmenich SA.
